Nanoscience Comes to Life at Palace Green Library Exhibition

Durham, 20 May 2025 - Visitors to Palace Green Library were treated to a captivating journey into the microscopic world of bionanoscience during a one-day interactive exhibition hosted by the Centre for Programmable Biological Matter.
Titled “The Stuff That Dreams Are Made of: Forging Nanomachines from Nature’s Building Blocks,” the event welcomed families, students, and curious minds of all ages to explore the cutting edge of scientific innovation. Running from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the free exhibition provided a venue of discovery and imagination.
Exhibition Structure
Attendees engaged with hands-on activities including educational posters, scientific puzzles, and immersive virtual reality experiences that brought protein structures to life. The event aimed to demystify the emerging field of bionanoscience – an area of research that harnesses nature’s molecular machinery to build nanoscale devices with potential applications in medicine, materials and beyond.
“We wanted to make science accessible and exciting for everyone,” said one of the organisers. “Bionanoscience is a field that’s rapidly evolving, and it’s important to show how it could impact our everyday lives in the near future.”

The exhibition not only showcased current research but also encouraged visitors to imagine the possibilities of programmable biological matter. With a strong emphasis on education and engagement, the event successfully blended scientific insight with family-friendly fun.
As the day concluded, many left inspired by the potential of nanotechnology and the role it may play in shaping the future. Thank you to all of you that attended our Exhibition and stay turned for future inspiring events.
We would like to thank The Academy of Medical Sciences and the Leverhulme Trust for their support with our exhibition.
