CPBM at School Science Festival

During the last week of March, CPBM members had the privilege of taking part in Durham University’s annual Schools Science Festival.

The festival invites groups of schoolchildren from across Durham and the wider region to take part in interactive activities explaining the research conducted by scientists at the university. Over the three days, this year’s festival we welcomed 744 students from 22 schools, and many teachers shared that they were extremely impressed not only by the activities but also by the researchers delivering them.

Aiming to inspire, involve and educate, our team hosted an interactive session on the work of CPBM that featured exciting demonstrations, engaging puzzles, and educational models. The activities helped to explain the work of CPBM researchers working on the design and purification of protein cages.

The enthusiasm and excitement in the room from Year 10 groups was incredible to see. Our researchers had a fantastic time discussing the world of bionanotechnology, and some of the complex research problems they face every day, with their visitors.

A huge thank you to every school who joined us and the rest of our colleagues across Durham’s Biosciences department, as well as the brilliant festival organisers who made it all possible for these school groups.

We are already looking forward to next year’s festival and can’t wait to continue sparking curiosity and working through scientific problems with some more promising future scientists!
