Cambridge Researcher visits Durham to sharing advances in DNA Nanotechnology

Durham, June 2025 – The Centre for Programmable Biological Matter (CPBM) at Durham University was delighted to welcome Roger Rubio Sanchez from the University of Cambridge for a research visit and seminar on the 11th of June 2025.

Roger presented an engaging talk to members of the Biosciences and Chemistry Departments, titled “A DNA-Nanotechnology Toolkit for Lipid Membrane Bio-Engineering and Synthetic Cell Science.” His work explores tools from bionanotechnology to add new functions to lipid membranes

In this talk, he presented strategies to design and apply DNA nanodevices with precise structures and functions that can attach to and act on membranes. This research not only provides insight into how biological membranes work but also brings us closer to building synthetic cells capable of complex behaviours like sensing, communication, movement, and division.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen links between Durham University and the University of Cambridge in these rapidly advancing areas of science.

Roger is also a Unano member and will be presenting during our November session this year.
